About Agrisud International
Agrisud, 'the NGO which creates businesses', is engaged in the struggle against poverty and in promoting the food security of poor people in many countries of the South.
Their mission: to enable human communities in the South to live decently on their land and off their land. This is often called autonomy, but Agrisud prefers to call it dignity.
Since its foundation in 1992, it has been associated with the creation of 67,000 very small businesses in about twenty countries in Africa, Asia or South America and, more recently, in France.With the help of the local partners that it trains, Agrisud provides assistance to very small farms, which are often family-owned, in order to provide producers with additional technical support (circulation of ecological farming practices), business management assistance (support in putting together and analysing operating accounts) and organisational assistance (consolidated purchases of seeds, maintaining irrigation schemes, bringing products to market, etc.)
With the Club Med
Given that, in some cases, the organisation of the local offer of fresh products could not fulfil the demand of its Resorts, Club Med sought to contribute to improving the offer provided by small local producers. This took the shape of a partnership with the Agrisud NGO, signed in the end of 2008, aimed at enabling local producers to supply the Club Med Resorts and assist them in farming their land more sustainably using agro-ecology principles.
The benefits are as follows:
- - assistance to farmers entering the market economy and in the use of sustainable farming techniques so that they can ensure greater business security;
- - buffets offering customers fresh local produce, which is eco-friendly and is more relevant to the region;
- - secure supplies of fresh produce and an increase in the share of local purchases in the supply of Club Med;
- - reducing the CO2 impact of the transportation of the products concerned;
- - contributing to the relocation of smallholder farmers...
With 400 very small farms receiving assistance in five countries (Senegal, Morocco, Brazil, Indonesia, Tunisia), total support provided by the end of 2018 in excess of €300,000 and more than 182 tonnes of agro-ecological products delivered to our villages. Club Med has made a commitment to support 1000 local producers by 2023.
Some of the projects funded :
In Senegal, in Casamance, Agrisud and its local partner, the CPAS (Centre for the promotion of agriculture and business in Diembéring) has been assisting 150 market gardening businesses since 2009 in improving their techniques and their management methods, so that they are able to produce high-quality fruit and vegetables on a regular basis, and thereby fulfil local demand, as well as that of the Club Med Resort of Cap Skirring (in 2014, this resort purchased 41% of its fruit and vegetables from these market gardeners, who have improved the resilience and independence of their businesses thanks to the regular stream of income). These market gardening businesses have become small self-sufficient farms, able to finance their own operations (small equipment, seeds) and, on occasion, their investments (pumps for irrigation) by joining forces with other businesses.
In Morocco, since 2010, the Asni Igran project has aimed to professionalize family tree farms and enhance their fruit production in the Asni area (Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region). Asni's family farms have been able to move from a precarious situation to a situation of autonomy. A total of 20 Very Small Enterprises were supported by Club Med, representing approximately 215 people.
In Bali, Agrisud supports farming families to build sustainable local supply chains for fruit and vegetables. To this end, water pumps have been installed to collect and store rainwater in order to ensure a clean and sustainable water source during the dry season. To date, 8 farming families have received technical training to switch to agroecology, and 5 provide their products to Club Med Bali.
In Rio das Pedras, the project aims to develop and professionalize relations between the village and local producer groups so that Club Med can obtain supplies. A total of 10 farms were supported between 2010 and 2015, representing about 30 people. Since the end of 2015, the COMISFLU cooperative has been supported in the supply of fruit, vegetables and processed products after having shown its interest in contracting with Club Med. It includes a total of 69 families or about 270 people.
Soon in China :
In the province of Guangxy, around the Club Med village of Guilin, Agrisud has been implementing the "Contribute" project since 2019. The project aims to help local family farms adopt new farming practices in order to improve their production and benefit from a new marketing channel. Thanks to a diffusion of agro-ecological practices around the village of Guilin (reduced use of chemicals) for 60 families, the objective is to produce 60 to 90 tons of fresh produce per year (mainly vegetables) to supply the village of Guilin (35 to 53% of annual consumption) and an increase in initial income of 41% for families involved in the new sectors.
Use of the collected funds
The funds collected are intended to purchase and install, for example, solar water pumps for market gardens or to create irrigation systems to secure access to water and guarantee arable land. The scarcity of water resources in the dry season requires efficient irrigation systems. The solar water pump is the solution with the most advantages: long service life, easy maintenance, less dependence on fuel, slower and more consistent pumping, and of course ecological performance with reduced CO2 emissions.
Producers are also trained in the use and maintenance of these new facilities and in the development of agro-ecology in general.
